Power BI 101 and an Ask the Experts Panel: Power BI and Data Analytics for Enviro’s (June 2021)

The "Power BI and Data Analytics for Enviros" meetup group is all about sharing tips, tricks and hacks for analysing, visualising and communicating environmental data. The purpose of this blog is to summarise the key take-aways from each of the presenters, to help with sharing knowledge, empowering others and creating a strong data culture within our community.

In June, Alice took us through a ‘Getting Started’ Power BI demo using freely available streamflow datasets from the DELWP WMIS website. You can download some of the CSV files from this website, and follow-along for yourself! We then had special guest MVP and Data Unicorn Greg Nash help us out by answering all the tricky Power BI questions!

You can watch the entire recording in the video above, or skip ahead to the sections that interest you by clicking on the individual videos below. The blog is connected to our Meetup group and YouTube channel recording, so we would LOVE to have you subscribe to these and become part of our growing community 😊.

Alice presented a Power BI demo, showing you how to import data from CSV files, transform it, perform data modelling and create some simple visualisations to show streamflow variations over time across Victoria. Her key tips and learnings for getting started included:

  1. Download: Download Power BI Desktop to your machine (for FREE here!)

  2. Dataset: Select an easy dataset to get started with (clean data, fun and easy to analyse)

  3. Business Question: Come up with a problem you want to solve… or a question you want answered

  4. Learn: Spend some time learning how to use Power BI

  5. Explore: Explore your data, have fun, and don’t be afraid to break things!

The DiscoverEI team have previously summarised some of the best Power BI blogs out there in this article HERE.
