UWA’s data-driven journey towards sustainability

The "Power BI and Data Analytics for Enviros" meetup group is all about sharing tips, tricks and hacks for analysing, visualising and communicating environmental data. The purpose of this blog is to summarise the key take-aways from the sessions, to help with sharing knowledge, empowering others and creating a strong data culture across our community.

November 2023: Session summary

We had an excellent presentation from Dr. Jason Hamer of dARTA, on The University of Western Australia’s (UWA) data-driven journey to become a sustainable campus. While the focus was largely on UWA’s internal and external sustainability dashboards, Jason also showcased the backend architecture that makes them possible, some of his amazing Power BI tips and tricks and a story about the journey itself.

The feedback, discussion and context of the session was incredibly well received with many audience members asking for a follow-up from Jason - stay tuned as we may look to make this happen in one of our 2024 sessions!

Our Speaker

Dr. Jason Hamer is formally trained as an environmental scientist, and completed a PhD in botany and climate science in 2015. Preferring to sit in front of a computer than do field work, he soon found a niche: statistics, artificial intelligence and data visualisation. This niche lead Jason into a career in Business Intelligence where he worked in data analysis, data engineering and data science roles. Yet he never lost track of his passion for the environment, and the joy that comes from making a difference. To align his skillset with his values, Jason created his own business (dARTa) to make data skillset more accessible and affordable to the smaller change makers of the world. He now works exclusively in the for-purpose sector as a freelance full-stack data specialist.
