Water for Life: Power BI as a community engagement tool

The "Power BI and Data Analytics for Enviros" meetup group is all about sharing tips, tricks and hacks for analysing, visualising and communicating environmental data. The purpose of this blog is to summarise the key take-aways from the sessions, to help with sharing knowledge, empowering others and creating a strong data culture across our community.

Session Summary
For our August 2022 session, we had the pleasure of having Belinda Walters (Communications Lead - Greater Melbourne Urban Water & System Strategy) and DiscoverEI’s very own Alice Drummond (co-founder DiscoverEI) present on the Water for Life strategy Power BI report. Belinda provided context on the project, including:
How they approached this collaborative task requiring input and endorsement across four water corporations
How Power BI was used to complement a large, technical document
Tips on using Power BI to synthesise large chunks of technical information for the everyday reader
How to keep content interesting and engaging while operating in a highly regulated environment.
Whilst Alice focused on the technical elements of the report including: design features such as bookmarks & buttons; corporate styles and layouts; embedding videos; intuitive navigation and loads more!

About Belinda Walters:
Belinda is currently overseeing communications for the Greater Melbourne Urban Water & System Strategy (GMUWSS) project on behalf of Greater Western Water, Melbourne Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water. Belinda has a strong history in the public sector with previous roles held at Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). Prior to this she spent several years in the private sector at the helm of a successful craft brewery. Belinda lives in the Yarra Ranges with her partner Leigh and their mischievous dog Lemmy. Alice is the Director of Environmental Analytics and Co-Founder of DiscoverEI. As a Microsoft MVP in the Data Platform, Alice brings her passion in combining Power BI with design to bring environmental data to life. Drawing on her background in environmental engineering, Alice works collaboratively with government organisations to turn mountains of data into practical, useful, decision-guiding insights, and gets a real buzz from training the next generation of data champions, and is a regular speaker at community events and conferences.
